Sigiriya is one of the eight wonders of the world. This was built by King Kashyapa long time ago. The sigiriya frescoes have now been compared with the Ajantha paintings in India and it was clearly concluded that they are most similar to them.

Sri Lanka once known as Tambapanni, Serendib, Lakdiwa, Ceylon is an island. It is especially because of this feature that Sri Lanka has been so beautiful. That is why so many tourists visited Sri Lanka. But the sudden Tsunami disaster changed the whole scene.  Not only us Lankans, the whole world was disappointed at this. Yet there is nothing we could do by thinking about it. The only thing we can now do is to rebuild our motherland with all our effort to a better harmonious land as it was long time ago.

There are people of several races living there . The Sinhalese form the majority while the tamil, moor, malay, burghur come in minor amounts.About seventy five percent of the living population are Theravadha Buddhists by birth, while the rest are Mahayana Buddhists,Christians, Catholics,Anglicans, Muslims, Hindus,etc.

Sri Jayawardhenapura Kotte is our capital but Colombo is still known as the commercial capital.

We are a democratic socialist republic. We were a colony for more than four centuries, being under the Portugeese, Dutch and the British empire respectively.It was the 4th of February 1948, that we won freedom.

Just like every other nation in this world, we have our own unique culture, which we are very proud of, and also noteworthy to mention it's one of the most oldest in the world and also highly rich in value and expression.

We hold a heritage which is more than two thousand five hundred years old. The ancient monument ruins,stupas,rock inscriptions("sellipis") illustrate this feature to the world .The most noble "temple of the Tooth Relic" is one of these, we do value and respect as Sri Lankans.

We have a strong education system. Education is given free in government (public) registered schools from Grade 1 to Grade 13. The University system is highly competitive. Yet it is given free. Apart from free education, scholarships and bursaries are offered.

The official languages of Sri Lanka are Sinhala and Tamil but English is widely used in many places.

It indeed is a pearl. The people living in there are very helpful,  caring , and hospitable.
